Local Clinical Trial Open for Prostate Cancer Patients

October 31, 2013

21st Century Oncology of Michigan conducting clinical trial in Farmington Hills

Farmington Hills, Mich. – Oct. 31, 2013 – 21st Century Oncology of Michigan, part of the nation’s largest radiation oncology provider, announces today a local clinical trial offering a new, shorter treatment option for qualifying prostate cancer patients.

Patients with low-risk prostate cancer that qualify for the clinical trial will receive a specialized form of radiation therapy called Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT). This treatment option can deliver higher doses of radiation in fewer treatment sessions, with less risk to surrounding healthy tissue. SBRT is commonly used for early stage breast cancer, and researchers are hoping this will help prostate cancer patients as well.

“New research concludes that the concept of giving fewer, big treatments has been shown to be a more effective way of killing prostate cancer,” says Principal Investigator and Board Certified Radiation Oncologist with 21st Century Oncology, Jeffrey Forman, M.D. “Through this trial, we are hoping to provide this shorter treatment method, not only for convenience, but better outcomes.”

The data from this clinical study will be compiled with data from across the U.S. in conjunction with Yale University’s Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy, and Effectiveness Research Center (COPPER). Outcomes of those treated with SBRT will be compared against outcomes of those treated with other modalities.

Patients interested in learning more about the clinical trial should discuss their options with their physician. Treatments related to the study will be conducted at 21st Century Oncology of Michigan’s Farmington Hills location, 28595 Orchard Lake Road Suite 110 Farmington Hills, MI 48334. New patients participating in the trial will be on the five-treatment schedule.
